Course spotlight - The Palmetto Dunes Trifecta - Hilton Head, SC

Golf trip to Hilton Head? Yes Please...don't want to plan it? Even better...this spring we head down to Hilton Head Island for a competitive yet fun, emphasis on fun two man golf tournament.

Hilton Head was selected for a multitude of reasons with its status as a premier golf destination and its prime spring weather. Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort provides a must-visit venue for golfers of all levels. Boasting three world-class courses designed by legends of the game—Robert Trent Jones, George Fazio, and Arthur Hills—Palmetto Dunes offers a variety of challenges, stunning scenery, and exceptional course conditions. And weather...April weather in Hilton Head is highly conducive to spending all day outside. Check out the courses below and come join us in April for the Spring Training Classic!

Hilton Head has some of the best weather and scenery for spring golf

  • April brings mild temperatures to Hilton Head, typically ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s without the heat at humidity of the summer months.

  • While spring showers are possible, April generally has lower rainfall compared to the summer months, providing plenty of dry, sunny days perfect for golfing.

  • The island’s courses are in excellent condition in April, with lush green fairways and blooming flowers enhancing the overall experience.

  • Many of the courses feature colorful landscaping, including azaleas that are in full bloom, adding a touch of beauty to each round.

Robert Trent Jones Course

The Robert Trent Jones Course is arguably the most iconic of the three at Palmetto Dunes, known for its picturesque oceanfront views and strategic design elements. Among if not the first of the famous architects to begin laying their mark on Hilton Head, RTJ's course opened in 1967 and was later renovated in 2002. True to his design philosophy, strategy is rewarded, calculated risks offer ample rewards. Strategic bunkering, water hazards, wide fairways and large greens are all showcased - creating forgiveness for the casual golfer and challenges for advanced players. Par-72 layout at 7,000 yards from the championship tees, ~6500 from the Blues and ~6100 from the Whites.

Did I mention the bunkering??

Key Features:

  • Signature Hole: The par-5 10th hole is the highlight of the course. Known for its stunning oceanfront backdrop, it’s one of the most photographed holes in Hilton Head. The elevated green provides panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, creating both a visual treat and a challenging approach shot for golfers.

  • Water Hazards: The course incorporates lagoons and lakes that come into play on 11 holes, requiring precision and careful club selection throughout the round.

  • Bermuda Greens: The course features Bermuda grass greens, which are fast and well-maintained, adding to the challenge of putting, especially in the afternoon when the ocean breeze picks up.

What Golfers Love:

  • Scenic Beauty: The course layout takes full advantage of its coastal location, offering several holes with ocean views and lush natural landscaping. The back nine is particularly scenic, blending the marshland with wide fairways and water features.

  • Playability: While the course provides plenty of challenges, its forgiving fairways make it accessible for golfers of all skill levels. Beginners appreciate the chance to play a world-class course without feeling overwhelmed, while experienced golfers enjoy the strategic elements that demand precision.

Course Highlights:

The beginning tee shot starts with a welcoming wide fairway that leads up into a slightly elevated green. The bunkering becomes evident with sand guarding both sides. The second has the first of RTJ's water hazards and may come into play off the tee.

Designed as a traditional out and back routing. The front nine heads out from the resort towards the ocean. No 7 presents a challenge with an intimidating tee shot with water up the right side. Followed up with a spectacular par 3 requiring some distance to carry the lagoon.

The turn is bookended with par 5's first the 9th then the signature hole of the course, no 10. A straightforward par five that travels over 500 yards frequently into the ocean breeze. Get the cameras out as the hole culminates on a green where players can take in the Atlantic Ocean.

No. 12 is another albeit shorter picturesque par 3 that includes carry over the lagoon to a green that is longer than initial viewing suggests. A good drive on 13 will set up a green light wedge for a potential birdie. The course takes you back to the resort and finishes with dogleg left up to a turtled green, a final challenge. We left a few fantastic holes out for you to discover on your own. Next up:

George Fazio Course

The George Fazio Course is a par-70 layout known for its challenging design and is often regarded as the most difficult of the three courses at Palmetto Dunes. It’s the only course on Hilton Head designed by George Fazio, and it features a classic, low-country design with tree-lined fairways, large bunkers, and strategically placed water hazards. The course measures over 6,800 yards from the back tees, ~6,500 / ~6200 respectively from the Blue/White tees. A challenge indeed but a fair test. For those with the occasional or more than occasional slice you'll find it forgiving with most of the trouble to the left off the tee.

Key Features:

  • Long Par-4s: The Fazio course is famous for its long par-4 holes, which demand both distance and accuracy. The layout tests a golfer’s ability to manage their tee shots and approach shots to navigate the strategically placed bunkers and water hazards.

  • Bunkers Galore: The course features large, deep bunkers that guard both fairways and greens. The positioning of these bunkers forces players to make strategic decisions on nearly every hole.

  • Elevation Changes: While most of Hilton Head is relatively flat, the Fazio Course incorporates subtle elevation changes that add complexity to shot selection, especially around the greens.

What Golfers Love:

  • Challenge and Strategy: Advanced players appreciate the challenging layout that requires a mix of power and finesse. With long par-4s and a need for precise approach shots, the course tests every aspect of a golfer’s game.

  • Serene Environment: Set amidst towering pines and thick foliage, the course offers a tranquil atmosphere, enhancing the experience of navigating its tough design.

  • The fabulous four finishing holes, three well-bunkered par 4s and the great par-3 17th over water.

Course Highlights

Another encouraging start with a forgiving landing zone off the first tee with some length that requires an accurate approach into a narrow green. Number 2 follows up as one of the two par 5s. A tricky tee shot best plays to a 3 shot hole with the first water feature hugging the right side of the raised green.

A wide fairway on 7 meanders down to the canal and leaves a nice sightline to an elevated green.

The 11th tee shot over the lagoon provides a chance to cut the corner but don't be long on your approach with occasional alligator sightings in the back pond.

The signature hole, 16th, showcases bunkers throughout and a guarded green with water right and more bunkers left. The 17th follows as one of the best par 3s on the entire island. With the canal running cutting the hole in half monitoring the wind is critical for club selection and keeping your ball dry.

One final long par 4 up 18 and take stock of how your game stood up on this true test. Next up:

Arthur Hills Course

The Arthur Hills Course is known for its rolling terrain and incorporation of Hilton Head’s natural beauty. When it opened in the mid-80s the course was protected by natural mounding and contours of the land. There was no rough, it has been added since but the mounds remain distinctive. The par-72 layout plays just over 6,600 yards from the back tees offering a good balance of challenge and playability, making it a favorite among a wide range of golfers.

Key Features:

  • Signature Hole: The par-4 17th hole is the signature of the course, featuring a challenging approach shot over water to a green protected by both bunkers and marshland. It’s a visually stunning hole that requires both accuracy and strategy to avoid trouble.

  • Rolling Fairways: The course offers undulating fairways that set it apart from the typically flat courses of Hilton Head. This feature adds an extra dimension of difficulty and requires careful shot planning.

  • Natural Beauty: The course weaves through natural lagoons and maritime forests, providing a scenic and serene golfing environment. Wildlife sightings are common, adding to the overall experience.

What Golfers Love:

  • Playability and Variety: The Hills Course offers a nice mix of easier and more challenging holes, making it suitable for golfers of all skill levels. The diverse terrain keeps each round exciting and offers something different from hole to hole.

  • Condition and Maintenance: The course is consistently well-maintained, with fast, smooth greens and well-groomed fairways, enhancing the quality of play throughout the year.

  • Fun course off the tee - visually stimulating with a combo of bunkers or water throughout yet forgiving enough to swing away.

Course Highlights

The round kicks off with a mid length par 4 where the natural mounding becomes evident. You can see the natural dune formations that roll throughout the hole. Holes 2 and 3 share a water lagoon complex, the first a short par 4 followed by a par 3 summon beautiful yet exacting shots over the lagoon. The next few holes bend around the old Port Royal lighthouse which was operational through the civil war up until the 1930s.

According to Arthur the fun starts on the 12th hole with a right water lining the entire length of the hole.

The signature 17th provides quite the challenge with a water carry tee shot and approach. The green angles away from you so take extra club! The final par 5 takes you back to the clubhouse with a chance for one last birdie.
